CEP Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Comedy Evaluator Pro?

Comedy Evaluator Pro (CEP) is an easy to use online software application designed for comedians and comedy entertainers to measure and quantify live audience response (laughter, cheering or applause) generated during an entire act or a specific comedy bit as demonstrated in any video or audio recording.

The evaluation functionality of CEP is based on the two primary and clearly observable events that occur when a comedian is entertaining an audience:

1. The comedian is talking and delivering their comedy material or…

2. The audience is responding by laughing, cheering or applauding (called Positive Audience Response or PAR)

Using a video or audio recording of a live comedy performance, these events can be easily and objectively measured using CEP to provide:

– Overall laughter generation results (accumulated measurement)

– Performance benchmarking and accomplishment

Delivering headliner level stand-up comedy material is the goal of every comedian serious about entertaining audiences at the highest possible level.

Q: What can Comedy Evaluator Pro REALLY do to help me improve my stand-up performances?

Because that question simply cannot be answered in just a few paragraphs, please review this article:

Comedy Evaluator Pro: What It Can Tell You And How It Can Help You

But keep this in mind as you consider using CEP for performance benchmarking and improvement:

The vast majority of comedians use shear “trial and error” to develop and deliver their stand-up comedy act, adding many months — if not years — to the time it takes to be able to generate headliner level audience response to their stand-up comedy material.

In the highly competitive world of stand-up comedy where stage time is at a premium, especially in the beginning of a stand-up comedy career…

CEP provides comedians, comedy entertainers and speaking professionals with some distinct and significant advantages over the competition when it comes to performance improvement and reaching important performance milestones far more quickly and efficiently.

Until a comedian is able to consistently generate a minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter for each performing minute (PAR Score 30), they simply DO NOT have a highly marketable comedy entertainment product.

Q: Isn’t stand-up comedy completely subjective? How can Comedy Evaluator Pro measure that?

Non-professional stand-up comedy followers and so-called “established” comedians who don’t have the talent or skill to generate headliner level laughter levels with their stand-up comedy are usually quick to say that stand-up comedy is completely “subjective” and cannot be “measured”.

But this is not accurate. While there are certainly subjective aspects to stand-up comedy determined on an individual basis, there is also an objective aspect of stand-up comedy that is not only clearly observable, but objectively measurable and quantifiable as well:

Subjective Attributes: Type of comedy material delivered (comedy content), demeanor, attitude, perceived “character”, delivery “style”, audience appeal relative to audience demographics, etc.

Subjective attributes of stand-up comedy are determined on an individual-by-individual basis, usually without regard to the actual audience response generated by the comedian in front of a live audience.

Objective Attributes: The measurable frequency and duration of laughter, cheering or applause generated by a comedian from a live audience during any stand-up comedy performance, without regard to individually determined subjective attributes.

CEP is used to objectively measure and quantify actual laughter, cheering or applause generated that a comedian produces each minute from a live audience during any particular live performance.

Regardless of any subjective attributes a comedian may have that are determined on an individual-by-individual basis…

If a comedian is not consistently generating a minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter each performing minute for live audiences, they are NOT performing at headliner levels.

CEP does not measure any subjective attributes a comedian may have when performing on a stand-up comedy stage, their suitability for acting roles, demographic audience appeal, “character” likeability, etc.

CEP can only help measure and quantify the actual audience response RESULTS (laughter, cheering and/or applause) a comedian was able to achieve from a live audience on a minute-by-minute basis for any particular recorded stand-up comedy performance.

Q: Doesn’t audience size have an impact on how much laughter a comedian can generate?

Yes. But audience size is only one of a number factors called audience dynamics, which have a direct impact on a comedian’s ability to generate laughter in the live performing environment, in addition to the quality of the comedy material delivered and the skill of the comedian:

Here’s the bottom line:

Every professional comedian, whether they use CEP or not should be acutely aware of audience dynamics and how they can positively or negatively impact a comedian’s laughter generation ability.

Otherwise, it can be difficult to make intelligent judgements and decisions on stand-up comedy material, which should always be made relative to the audience dynamics present for any particular performance.

Contrary to popular belief, audience size is NOT necessary the most critical factor when it comes to generating headliner level laughter levels, provided that the other audience dynamics are optimal for laughter generation.

Still, outside performances with the LEAST optimal audience dynamics present…

Individuals who are able to generate a minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter per performing minute (PAR Score 30) on a consistent basis are delivering headliner level stand-up comedy material, whether they hold the “title” of headliner or not.

Q: How accurate is Comedy Evaluator Pro?

CEP is a precision audience response measurement tool.

However, its true accuracy and ability to objectively evaluate laughter generation for any given comedy performance is largely dependent on the individual using the CEP online software.

Let me clarify this:

I’ve had individuals who sent me videos of their “headliner” performance for a professional evaluation, supposedly attaining the minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter per performing minute (PAR Score 30).

But when I did my evaluation of the same video using CEP, the actual performance values were well below headliner levels because:

– They measured sneezes and coughs as laughter

– They measured 1 or 2 people laughing in an audience of 20-200+ people (not representative of collective audience laughter)

– They measured audience laughter for much longer than it actually occurred

– They measured getting heckled as laughter

– They measured laughter that didn’t occur

– Any combination above

There is no value in “cheating” or intentionally inflating laughter levels when it comes to using CEP because that won’t help anyone improve their performances or identify/achieve true headliner laughter levels.

An individual may be able to fool themselves into thinking they are “killing” on stage with skewed CEP results…

But audiences know better. So do talent buyers and agents. CEP is not needed to know when a comedian or comedy entertainer bombs on stage.

Q: How does Comedy Evaluator Pro work? Are there any instructions available?

Just check out The CEP Information Resources Page.

The process is so simple that a teenager can do a performance evaluation using CEP — literally.

Q: I just used CEP to evaluate a YouTube video of a comedian who I don’t think is funny at all. But your software says they are they are performing beyond the headliner standards you have indicated. What gives?

What you have just tried to do is compare an apple with an orange. This is common among those who are not yet comedy professionals.

Let me be more specific:

You have just tried to compare a comedian’s comedy material (that you don’t like, appreciate or can’t relate to) to the actual audience response RESULTS that comedian was able to command in front of a live audience (a group of individuals who collectively liked the comedian and could relate to or appreciate the comedy material the comedian delivered in the video).

Please keep this in mind:

CEP is a professional evaluation tool for comedians and comedy entertainers that measures live audience laughter generation RESULTS for any particular performance.

CEP DOES NOT determine the markets, niches, audiences or individuals that any particular comedian can or will appeal to.

Q: Do I need to be able to do math calculations in order to use Comedy Evaluator Pro?

No at all. All the “math” involved with CEP is calculated automatically.

Q: I’m a one liner comedian. Would using Comedy Evaluator Pro be of benefit to me?

It doesn’t matter whether you are an old school style one liner comedian or a new school topic based, conversational style comedian…

Headliner level comedy material is headliner level comedy material regardless of the delivery “style” and will generate laughter from audiences on a consistent basis, meeting or exceeding these criteria:

– A minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter each minute (PAR Score 30) and…

– 4-6+ laughs (punchlines) each performing minute

Your “style” of stand-up comedy does not matter. The laughter results you generate on a consistent basis DOES MATTER and is easily measured using CEP.

Q: I am comedy ventriloquist. Is Comedy Evaluator Pro of any value to me for performance improvement?

Absolutely. There are NO differences when it comes to generating headliner laughter levels as a stand-up comedian or comedy ventriloquist.

The difference lies in the presentation, which for comedy ventriloquists is primarily a dialogue style presentation and for stand-up comedians is primarily a monologue style presentation.

Q: I am a comedy magician. Can I use Comedy Evaluator Pro to improve my act?

Yes you can.

However there is a very important consideration that you must be aware of when using CEP for evaluating a comedy magic act, keeping in mind that the comedy mechanics and audience dynamics are exactly the same when it comes to laughter generation from a live audience:

Not all parts of a comedy magic act are necessarily designed to generate laughter.

Some parts of a comedy magic act may focus on the “awe” factor of magic and require some significant non-comedy set-up to get that “awe” factor.

Subsequently, your overall performance values can be less than 18 seconds of laughter, cheering and/or applause — the minimum headliner comedian laughter generation level.

In other words…

You simply cannot necessarily compare your overall magic act that may have built-in aspects NOT designed to get laughs with that of a headliner comedian who must generate 4-6+ laughs per minute during a continuous stand-up comedy act delivery.

Fortunately, Comedy Evaluator Pro provides minute-by-minute analysis.

So you can easily use CEP to evaluate the parts of your magic act designed specifically to generate laughter and know if the laughter you are generating for those aspects of your comedy magic act act is at headliner comedy levels.

Q: I am a public speaker who incorporates humor into my presentations. Can I use Comedy Evaluator Pro to evaluate and improve my presentations?

Absolutely.

But there is an important aspect of delivering a speech or presentation that you must be aware of, keeping in mind that comedy mechanics and audience dynamics are exactly the same for comedians, comedy entertainers or speaking pros when it comes to laughter generation from a live audience:

Not all parts of a speech or presentation are necessarily designed to generate laughter.

So you cannot necessarily compare a speech or presentation from beginning to end that may have built-in aspects NOT designed to get laughs with that of a headliner comedian who must generate 4-6+ laughs per minute during a continuous stand-up comedy act.

Fortunately, Comedy Evaluator Pro provides minute-by-minute analysis.

So you can use CEP to evaluate specific parts of your speech or presentation designed specifically to generate laughter and know if the laughter you are generating for those aspects of your speech or presentation is generating headliner comedian laughter levels.

Also know this:

If you are generating an average 30-45+ seconds of laughter for each 5 minutes of your speech or presentation, you are on fire in the world of public speaking.

Q: Don’t I have to be a headlining comedian in order to deliver headliner level stand-up comedy material?

Absolutely not. One of the most significant features of using CEP to evaluate your stand-up comedy performances is this:

You are NOT dependent upon other comedians, comedy club managers, talent buyers, etc. to know with great certainty that you are (or or not) able to deliver stand-up comedy material that generates headliner level laughter levels.

In the world of stand-up comedy — the “title” you hold or the “position” you have in a line-up of comedians DOES NOT determine whether or not you are generating headliner level laughter levels.

Check out these Success Stories to see video example after example of comedians who were able to deliver headliner level stand-up comedy material without holding the “title” of headliner.

The reality is this:

Until you are able to deliver 4-6+ solid laughs per minute (for a minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter generated for each performing minute — PAR Score 30) on a consistent basis…

You simply will NOT move up the stand-up comedy “ladder” with any significant speed — no matter what “style” of live stand-up comedy entertainment you bring to the table or the market you try to bring it to.

Q: How does the CEP free trial work?

You simply sign-up as a CEP member (no credit card is required) in order to get access to 14 days of free access to the fully functional version of CEP.

Q: How much does CEP cost to use after the 14 day free trial period?

There are two single payment options for continued CEP access (the payment buttons will display in your CEP Members Area upon expiration of the 14 day free access trial period):

1. A 3 month access single payment option that allows members to simply access CEP for 3 months at a time as needed – $39.95.

This option is designed for those who have not yet decided whether or not stand-up comedy is a long term adventure for them, yet they still want the minute-by-minute performance evaluation advantages CEP has to offer — when they need it.

2. A lifetime access single payment option – $99.95

This option is designed for those who have decided that stand-up comedy is a long term adventure for them and they understand the value that CEP evaluations bring to the development and delivery of their stand-up comedy material.

I should also mention that individuals who invest in the Killer Stand-up Comedy System also get 1 year access to CEP as a free bonus.

Q: I’ve seen some nasty comments online about Comedy Evaluator Pro. I’ve asked several comedians about it and they say it’s bogus. What do you have to say about that?

I am acutely aware of the negative comments and misconceptions surrounding CEP. If you want to know what that’s all about:

Related Article: Have You Heard Negative Comments About Comedy Evaluator Pro? Here’s Why…

As I mentioned in that article, there is no theory, conjecture or speculation involved with CEP.

No matter what, a comedian or comedy entertainer is either talking and expressing what they have to say on stage or the audience is responding with laughter, cheering or applause.

If the collective audience response is not measurable or only mildly measurable, the comedian is bombing or performing at open miker levels.

But you will need to make your own judgement about the value of CEP and how it can possibly give you a serious edge over the competition for yourself.
